Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
The shop has been in this shopping center since 1989, in its current location (within the shopping center) since 1992, and under current ownership since 1995. That is to say...we have been here a while serving Williamson County & Austin and their collectibles needs!
What is your primary product or service?
Collectibles of many kinds. We offer sports cards (BB, BSK, FB, HKY, RACING, etc.), Trading Card Games (Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, YuGiOh, etc.), collecting supplies, autographed memorabilia (baseballs, footballs, jerseys, photos, etc.). We have an extensive inventory!!
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Walt Case, one of the owners, collected cards as a youngster in the 50's. He never lost his love of the hobby! As the manager, I have been working in the hobby industry for almost 18 years!
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
We make ourselves available to help people better understand how we view the hobby. We help people to get the best return from the hobby. Some folks want to invest, and others simply love to collect. We offer information about what creates value, but we also talk of our appreciation of the hobby side! We prefer it always be a hobby first!!
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We currently have the one location. Previously, we had a second store in Round Rock. Without just the right person to operate a store, it is hard to have more than one location. We would rather offer the best service from one spot, than offer a so-so experience from two locations!
Provide detailed directions to your location
We are located on the southwest corner of the intersection of Spicewood Springs Road and HWY 183 in North Austin. Our location is on the very north end of Spicewood (it becomes McNeil Road on the other side of 183, if that helps to pin point it!). We are approx. three miles north of the Arboretum and approx 3 miles south of Lakeline Mall.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept, credit, debit, checks, cash, and have even accepted PayPal payments. We would prefer the transactions be handled here in the shop...for acounting purposes, so PayPal is sort of a last resort!
Which areas do you service?
We have customers from all over the great state of Texas. We have shipped goods to California. But, we do our best work helping folks from the greater Austin area (Georgetown, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Pflugerville, Lakeway, Marble Falls, Bastrop, etc.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The owners of the shop are Walt Case, Craig Vernier, and Jim Bailey. Walt and Craig are here at intervals during the week from an operational standpoint. And I, Mark Dorsey, am here 5 days of the week to help folks out as well.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday thru Friday, 11:00am-7:00pm
Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm
Sunday Noon-5:00pm
we can be found 24/7 on our website, www.cardtradersofaustin.com, and on our facebook page-Card Traders of Austin.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
A smile. We hope all who enter the shop leave with a smile. If you sell something to us, buy something from us, or simply come in seeking information...we hope we are able to have folks leave feeling happy about there time spent here at the shop.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We believe people want to be treated fairly and honestly. We like people to be fair and honest, and there is no reason we should not act in kind. If you come to Card Traders of Austin...you might enter with skepticism because of how some people in the hobby have done business, in the past or the present. But, when you enter this store, you can expect to be treated fairly and with honesty.
